What is Acts of Grace?

Acts of Grace is a food pantry located at Grace UMC offering food and supplies to our neighbors in Charleston on Monday afternoons from 1pm to 3pm. The food pantry is stocked with donations of food and other basic supplies donated largely by the family and friends of Grace UMC church. The easiest way to access the food pantry is to park on Stoney Street. We ask people to please park on the grass, not in the clergy parking.

How Acts of Grace works

First time clients check in to Acts of Grace by filling out a form to qualify. So long as the applicant is below the poverty line, they qualify for assistance. Then volunteers will lead them to our supply room where the client is able to choose food and supplies according to their needs. Rather than giving them resources they are not going to eat/use, our clients choose what they want. After making their selections, they return to the check in room so everything can be weighed before being placed into their vehicle.

Volunteers

Acts of Grace is run 100% by volunteers. Some volunteers show up on Monday mornings to help stock the shelves, others serve on Monday afternoons to help distribute the food. Some volunteers do both.

Tailgate Cookout & Food Drive

Grace UMC is proud to support our food pantry.  Each August, we have a cookout and food drive on a Sunday. People place their donations on tables to show support for their favorite college football program. The school with the most donations by weight is proclaimed the winner. This year, an option of giving a monetary donation was provided; each $4 was equivalent to 1 pound of food. Here are this year's results, by weight:

  • Citadel 800.0
  • University of Florida 442.65
  • University of Tennessee 319.35
  • University of South Carolina 280.8
  • Clemson University 254.7
  • NC State 190.6
